Cabo de Gata Natural Park

The coastline of Cabo de Gata-Níjar is one of the best-preserved natural treasures on the Spanish Mediterranean. With over 50 kilometres of volcanic coast, this Natural Park protects virgin golden-sand beaches, hidden coves tucked between cliffs, and crystal-clear waters that rival Caribbean destinations.

Most beaches have restricted access in summer to preserve their natural state. This means planning ahead: setting off early, using shuttle buses, or exploring outside peak season. The reward is some of Spain's most spectacular coastal scenery, with no buildings in sight and an exceptional marine ecosystem.

From the iconic Mónsul and Genoveses — backdrops to international films — to remote coves like Cala Rajá or Enmedio, reachable only on foot, every beach has its own character. Here you'll find the perfect beach for you, whether you're after wide family-friendly bays or secluded spots to switch off completely.

Practical Information

Peak Season: July and August

During these months the main beaches (Mónsul, Genoveses, San José) reach full capacity. Car parks have access controls and close when full — usually before 11am. Setting off early or using the shuttle buses from San José is essential.

Best Time: May, June, September

Spring and early autumn offer the best experience. The water stays at a comfortable temperature (20–24°C), there are fewer visitors and access is easier. The weather remains warm and sunny — perfect for enjoying the beaches without the crowds.

What to Bring

Cabo de Gata beaches are wild: no beach bars, showers or facilities. Plenty of water, food, a sun umbrella and sun protection are essential for the day. The only exception is the town beach of San José, which has full facilities.

Tips to Make the Most of Your Visit

🏖️ Types of Beach

You'll find everything from wide fine-sand beaches ideal for families to rocky coves perfect for snorkelling. Each offers a unique experience depending on what you're looking for: full facilities or pristine natural surroundings.

🚌 Shuttle Bus

In summer a shuttle bus runs from San José to Mónsul and Genoveses. Approximate timetable: 9:00–20:00. Price: 2–5€ per journey. It's the best way to avoid parking problems.

💧 Stay Hydrated

Bring at least 2L of water per person. The Almería sun is intense and there are no fountains or bars at wild beaches. Dehydration is the most common problem among visitors.

🌬️ Levante Wind

Easterly wind is common in spring and summer. When the Levante blows, beaches like Genoveses become uncomfortable. Look for sheltered coves: Cala Amarilla, Cala Higuera, or the western side of the Cape.
