Playa Cala Montoya
Playa Cala Montoya is a volcanic cove situated between the Rellana de San Pedro and the Plomo cliffs, close to Las Negras. Its landscape is defined by the surrounding volcanic formations, offering a distinct natural environment within the Natural Park. It is a beach that combines tranquillity with geological uniqueness.
How to Get There
From Las Negras, take the road towards Rodalquilar. After approximately 2 kilometres, you will find a signposted turn-off for Cala Montoya. The final access is via a well-maintained dirt track, suitable for normal vehicles, which leads directly to the parking area. The journey from Las Negras takes approximately 5-10 minutes by car.
Parking and Facilities
There is a dirt parking area near the beach with limited capacity. During high season (July and August), it can fill up easily, so early arrival is recommended. The beach has no services such as showers, toilets, beach bars, or lifeguards. It is a completely natural beach with no infrastructure.
Beach Characteristics
The beach is approximately 150-200 metres long. The sand is mixed, with areas of coarse sand and small pebbles, dark in colour due to its volcanic origin. The swell is usually moderate, though it can intensify with Levante winds. The waters are clear and suitable for swimming. Visitor numbers are moderate for most of the year, increasing in the summer months.
What to Do
It is a suitable place for calm swimming and snorkelling, thanks to its clear waters and the presence of underwater rock formations. It is also a good spot for photographing volcanic landscapes and for walks along the shore, exploring the rock formations. The area is also suitable for observing seabirds.
