Pozo de los Frailes is a step from San José, with surprisingly good spots. Here are the village's best-rated restaurants, with a link to each listing and its phone number to book. It's a practical guide: the places are ordered by customer rating.

A stop without rushing

Pozo de los Frailes is one of those villages where eating is the excuse to stop. You eat calmly, on street terraces and without any hassle, with a mix you don't see on the coast: tacos, curry and the lifelong village cafés. It's a good stop on the way between Níjar and the coast, or if you're sleeping nearby, because parking is easy and nobody rushes you. In winter the village goes fairly quiet and many places open only at weekends, so midweek call ahead.

Canalla. tex-mex tacos, burritos and cocktails, in the Hostal Boutique Bajío building, on the way out of the village towards San José. Opinions agree on value for money and on the tacos being tasty. Hours change with the season: best to check their Instagram or call before going.

Satyaraj. the go-to Indian, on Calle Las Minas 2, with a terrace and views. Well spoken of, with dishes you don't find at every Indian and a good vegetarian range. Open 12:00 to 16:00 and 19:00 to 23:30; bookings on 632 347 959.
