Níjar
The municipal capital: craftsmanship, jarapas, and the most authentic white village.
Níjar is the municipal capital and one of the most authentic white villages in the province of Almería. Nestled in the foothills of the Sierra Alhamilla, about 30 kilometers from the coast, it preserves a historic center of narrow, whitewashed streets where traditional craftsmanship remains a vibrant activity.
Jarapas —colorful fabrics made from recycled rags— are the artisanal hallmark of Níjar. On Calle Real and its surroundings, several workshops and shops maintain this centuries-old tradition. Ceramics and esparto grass crafts are also prominent.
The village has good restaurants serving traditional Almerian cuisine, a 16th-century Mudejar church, and an atmosphere that feels authentic at any time of year.
