Cabo de Gata · one of the villages where you eat best in the Cabo
Agua Amarga is one of the villages where you eat best in the Cabo. Here are the best-rated restaurants in the village, with a link to each one's listing and a phone number to book. It's a practical guide: places are ordered by customer rating.
Here you eat slowly and with the sand still on your feet. Agua Amarga is a small village, and its table is the real thing: fish of the day, rice when it's the moment and no-fuss tapas at the usual bars. In summer the terraces fill up at midday and weekend dinners are worth booking well ahead, especially if you want a table facing the sea. The usual trick is to leave the car at the entrance and walk, because in August there's nowhere to park inside. The beach kiosks are a midday thing, fried fish and something fresh, and as autumn comes in they close one by one. Off-season the village keeps just the essentials open and it's better to call before heading down, because what's open in August may not be in January.
Asador La Chumbera. right on the beach, on the way to Los Muertos beach (Calle Ensenada s/n), with the grill and a Mediterranean feel and a mention in the Michelin guide. It's one of the best-known in the village, but one of the pricey ones: a meal runs around 50 or 60 euros a head without wine, and some complain about the price-to-portion ratio. Those who return value the terrace and the views. Open 13:30 to 17:00 and 20:00 to 00:00, closed Wednesdays and all of November, and booked through its website or by phone.
La Nonna. the Italian on Calle Aguada 17, unpretentious pasta and pizza. Mid-range price, calm atmosphere; reviews leave it as a solid option for a straightforward dinner rather than a big occasion. Open every day from 12:00 to 00:00.
El Trasmallo. small, on Calle Miramar 25, and one of the best spoken-of in the village for its fish and its meat. It doesn't publish a menu with prices and its hours shift with the season: in August it doesn't open before nine in the evening and off-season it cuts back days. Worth booking and asking by phone before going.
