Playa Cala Palmito
Cala Palmito is a discreet cove situated between El Barronal beach and the well-known Mónsul beach. Its slightly secluded location, accessible from the preceding dune, gives it a quieter and less crowded character than its neighbours. The landscape combines sand with volcanic rock formations, offering a natural environment without any constructions.
How to Get There
To access Cala Palmito, the starting point is the Mónsul car park. From San José, take the unpaved dirt track leading to Mónsul, a journey of approximately 4 km that takes about 10-15 minutes at a reduced speed. Once at the Mónsul car park, walk along the beach or the adjacent dune in an easterly direction until you reach Cala Palmito.
Parking and Facilities
The nearest car park is at Mónsul. During July and August, car access to this car park is restricted and costs 5-6€. It typically fills up before 9:00 AM. Alternatively, during high season, there is a shuttle bus service from San José costing approximately 2-5€. Cala Palmito lacks any type of facilities or services (beach bars, showers, toilets).
Beach Characteristics
Cala Palmito is a moderately sized beach with a mix of sand and small pebbles. The swell is usually gentle, although it can vary with Levante winds. Its waters are clear and suitable for swimming. Visitor numbers are low to medium, even in high season, due to its pedestrian access. The recommended time to visit is from May to October.
What to Do
Main activities at Cala Palmito include quiet swimming, sunbathing, and landscape observation. It is a suitable place to relax away from crowds. The absence of services makes it ideal for those seeking a more natural experience.
Practical Tips
- 💡 1. Bring water and food: There are no services on the beach, so it is essential to bring everything you need.
- 💡 2. Consider footwear: The walk from Mónsul involves sand and potentially hot surfaces in summer.
- 💡 3. Plan for parking: In July and August, arrive at Mónsul car park before 9 AM or use the shuttle bus from San José.
