Summer in Cabo de Gata: How to Make the Most of It
Summer is when the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park shows its full potential: crystal-clear water at the perfect temperature, endless daylight hours and a range of activities that goes far beyond lying on the sand. It is also peak season, so the difference between a memorable summer and one of queues and full car parks comes down to knowing what to do, where and at what time.
This guide gathers the best of summer in the park from our sports and activities, plans with kids and beaches sections. Every suggestion links to its own page with practical details, and at the end you will find tips for avoiding the busiest hours and spots.
One important note before we start: during the summer months, private vehicle access to Mónsul and Genoveses beaches is restricted and a shuttle bus runs from San José. Keep this in mind when planning your beach days in the southern part of the park.
Summer on the Water: Kayaking, Snorkelling, Diving and Boats
If there is one season to discover Cabo de Gata from the sea, this is it. The park's volcanic coastline hides coves and seabeds you can only reach by paddling, diving or sailing.
Kayaking and Paddle Boarding
The classic summer outing is kayaking the coves of the Natural Park from San José: it gets you to virgin coves that are impossible to reach by land. Several companies run guided trips in the area; you can compare them all in the full list of sports activities, with options in San José, El Cabo de Gata and Las Negras.
For a gentle start on calm water, paddle boarding at La Isleta del Moro is the friendliest option: crystal-clear bottom and very little swell.
Snorkelling and Diving
The park's seabeds are a marine reserve, and it shows. The star dive is the Arrecife de las Sirenas, one of the richest sea floors in the western Mediterranean, and snorkellers will find rewarding spots all along the coast.
There are dive centres in almost every coastal village: Isub Dive Centre operates in San José, and you will find more schools in La Isleta del Moro, Las Negras and Agua Amarga in the sports section, many offering beginner try-dives.
Boat Trips and Sailing
Seeing the volcanic cliffs from the water completely changes how you perceive the park. From San José you can join boat trips along Cabo de Gata and the sailing outings of El Cabo a Vela, with swimming stops at coves only reachable by sea. Boats also operate from Agua Amarga and from the village of El Cabo de Gata; they are all listed under sailing in the full activity list.

When the levante wind blows, the beach at El Cabo de Gata becomes a meeting point for kites and sails. YourTime Kite & Surf offers courses and beginner sessions in the area.

Summer with Kids: Plans That Work
The park is an excellent destination for families, but choose wisely: in summer, kids do best with water activities in the morning and quiet plans when the heat peaks.
Among family-friendly water activities, the transparent kayak in San José is one of the biggest hits: children can watch the seabed through the hull. Boat trips also work very well for little ones who cannot paddle yet.
Out of the water, a visit to the Cabo de Gata salt flats to watch flamingos is a classic that never fails, best at the start or end of the day. The horse riding trails of Cabacci Horse Trails and the astronomy sessions in San José round off the day once the sun goes down: with very little light pollution, the park's summer night sky is spectacular.

When the Heat Peaks: Dawn, Trails and Night
Hiking, Early Morning Only
In high summer, hiking means getting up early: the park's trails have almost no shade and by mid-morning the heat is serious. If you set out at dawn, the reward is near-empty paths and the best light of the day. You will find routes for every level in our sports section. Always carry plenty of water, a hat and serious sun protection.

Summer nights are one of Cabo de Gata's best-kept secrets. The combination of night hiking and telescope stargazing at Genoveses is unlike anything else: the park in silence under a sky full of stars.

Which Beach to Choose Each Day
In summer, choosing the right beach matters as much as the activity. Some quick pointers:
Mónsul and Genoveses are the park's two crown jewels, but remember the summer driving restriction: shuttle bus from San José, or arrive on foot or by bike. It is worth getting up early to enjoy them with few people around.
Playa de los Muertos, next to Carboneras, is among the most spectacular beaches on the Spanish coast; access involves a considerable walk down, worth weighing up in the heat and with small children.
Agua Amarga and Las Negras combine a village beach with services at hand: ideal for relaxed days with a terrace and fresh fish a few metres from your towel.

The Events of the Summer
The Níjar summer has its own calendar of events that return every season. Free open-air cinema tours the municipality's villages in July and August, and flamenco nights fill La Isleta del Moro, Agua Amarga and San José with music. In Las Negras, the Nudo Sur festival has brought together music and nature in recent summers, and at the end of the season Rodalquilar celebrates its Night of the Candles, with the village lit only by candlelight under the stars.

Practical Tips for the Summer
Get up early. This is the tip that sums up all the others. The famous beaches, the trails and the car parks fill up by mid-morning; at 9:00 you will have the park almost to yourself.
Book activities in advance. Kayaking, diving and boat trips sell out in July and August, especially at weekends. Each activity page in our sports section includes contact details for booking.
Water, shade and cash. Services inside the park are scarce by design: carry plenty of water, serious sun protection and some cash for beach bars and small shops.
Have a plan B. If you arrive at a beach and the car park is full, do not drive in circles: the park has dozens of alternative coves. The beach map is your best ally for improvising on the go.
With these ideas your summer is sorted: sea in the morning, calm at midday, and trails, stars or terraces once the sun goes down. Cabo de Gata in summer demands a little strategy, but it repays every early start many times over.
